What is the H–2A Visa?
The H-2A visa allows skilled farm workers to travel to the U.S. for temporary agricultural jobs, such as planting, harvesting, or working with animals. The visa is sponsored by a U.S. employer who requires assistance during busy seasons. The visa is valid for a set period, and workers must return home after the job ends. It offers a legal way to earn money and gain experience in U.S. farming.
It is valid for up to 10 months, depending on seasonal demand and includes the following:
Travel & Housing
- Workers are reimbursed for transportation from their home country to the job site.
- Employers provide free, furnished housing for the duration of the contract.
Meals
- Workers are responsible for purchasing and preparing their own food.
- Kitchen facilities are included in the provided housing.
Wages & Taxes
- Pay is hourly at a flat rate based on the Department of Labor’s prevailing wage.
- Wage rates vary by state.
- No taxes are withheld from employee pay.
Insurance Coverage
- Employers provide Workers’ Compensation or equivalent insurance for job-related injuries.
What You Need to Know
Plane Tickets
The employer will reimburse your inbound flight per DOL rules, but only after you complete the full contract.
- Return travel is covered at the end of your contract.
- Airport pickup will be arranged.
Transportation
- The employer will be responsible for free transportation from home to work and back as well as to get to town to buy groceries.
- You are responsible for your own transportation outside of those requirements.
Bank Account
Talk to your employer about available banking options. It’s important to open your own bank account and get an ATM card, which allows you to deposit and withdraw money easily.
To transfer money from the U.S. to your home country, you’ll need the following:
- Your bank’s name and address
- SWIFT code
- Routing number
- Your account number
Taxes
W-2 Tax Form
- At the end of your contract, your employer is required to give you a W-2 tax form.
- This form shows how much you earned and any applicable deductions.
- Keep your W-2 in a safe place, you will need it when applying for your next H-2A visa season. It serves as proof of employment and earnings.
Social Security Number (SSN)
- You must apply for a U.S. Social Security Number shortly after arriving.
- Your SSN is essential for working legally, filing taxes, opening a bank account, and obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
- Ask your employer for assistance if you’re unsure where or how to apply.
Documents Required to Apply for a Social Security Number
- Valid passport
- Visa stamp in your passport
- I-94 arrival record (this shows your date of entry and legal status in the U.S.)
- Original or notarized copy of your birth certificate (some offices may require this for identity verification)
Why Your SSN Is Important
- Employment: It officially registers you with U.S. government systems for employment and tax purposes.
- Banking: Most U.S. banks require an SSN to open a checking or savings account.
- CDL Licensing: You cannot apply for a Commercial Driver’s License without a valid SSN.
- Future Applications: Your SSN stays with you for life and will be used in future visa applications and employment records.
Before You Leave for the US
- Get an international driver’s license – if required by your employer
- Get medical insurance and life insurance to cover you during your stay in the US (Travel Insurance). The employer will NOT provide insurance coverage.
- Exchange your foreign currency for Dollars in your home country at the airport. $300 is a good start for the first two weeks.
- Lock your luggage and keep your hand luggage with you at all times.
- Remember some reading material for the flight, and for layovers.
- Keep all your documentation and your passport with you, and protect it. Losing a passport will create a lot of problems and even the inability to work.
- Remember not to watch other people’s luggage if they ask; it could be a trap.
- Keep your employer’s phone number with you as well as the address where you will be working.
- Take your bank information with you, in case you want to transfer money.
When you Arrive in the US
- You will receive an I94 form when you enter into America. This form must be kept in your passport at all times.
- Groups that will be working at the same employer, make sure you stay together until the employer picks you up.
- International phone cards are available at most gas stations and typically cost between $5 and $50.
- These cards can be used with any phone, including landlines.
- To use the card, dial the 1-800 number printed on the back, then scratch off the surface to reveal your PIN and enter it when prompted.
- After that, dial the South African number, starting with 011 27 (South Africa’s country code).
- Do not include the leading 0 from the area code. For example, if the number is 053 781 0463, you would dial 011 27 53 781 0463.
When you Start Working in the U.S.
- While in the U.S., you must follow all local laws.
- Ask your employer about their expectations and follow any workplace policies.
- Your pay rate must match what’s stated in your contract.
- If you smoke or drink, confirm your employer’s rules and respect them.
- Document all agreements to avoid misunderstandings.
- If you have concerns, speak with your employer first. If the issue isn’t resolved, contact our U.S. office.
- English is the primary language; lack of communication may cause issues.
- Note that U.S. electricity runs on 110V, not 220V.
- Wal-Mart is a common, affordable place to shop.
- U.S. laws are strictly enforced. Do not exceed speed limits, use drugs, or consume alcohol if under 21. Violations can lead to arrest.
